Please explain pool funding

To The Editor,

Off the back of last week’s edition regarding the John Houston Memorial Pool re-furbish and the community heated pool project, I ask Hay Shire Council to clarify in a clearer way the situation of funding. I have been confused with previous information to public. This includes local reporting leaving me with more questions than answers.

I have sought clarification from local councillors and it seems that there is $300,000 raised by the tireless efforts of the heated pool committee with the support of locals and businesses. The additional $700,000 is a government grant that, if not utilised, will be lost back to the government.

Previous reports and local conversations gave the impression that the full $1M was going to return to the Government. Is it politics, clash of beliefs and personalities that is going to see our community loose the Government grant and be left with no hope of a heated pool of some level?

I would have thought that those involved refusing to work together to reach a resolution would have their community needs and their $300,000 raised (which I believe to have enabled the grant to be available) first and foremost. I appreciate both sides of the arguments for and against. Why not work towards the opportunity of creating something rather than nothing?

It is disappointing and deflating when we start, work hard and build a great foundation for something for the good of others or personally. There is no doubt the committee for the heated pool project is feeling this way as with the initial goal seemingly ‘taken away’.

Is the hard-raised $300,000 better off coupled with the $700,00 to deliver a pool that is still going to be far better than what we have? Or be left with $300,000 and losing this opportunity?

Being Cass Hanna’s daughter, I saw, heard and learnt a lot from his dedication to HSC and the people of Hay district and from this, I ask for all involved to honestly, get your community hats back on, leave any personality clashes at the door and represent our Hay people to deliver a compromise.

This is why people vote for councillors and gave their money and time towards such wonderful fund-raising efforts, for the better of our community.

Please do correct any facts here I may have misunderstood.

This letter is purely to ensure our community understands what is going on, and asking those involved to get back to a resolution for the better of everyone. Lead by example and show us this is possible.

Thank you Jane Hanna, Orson Street, Hay
