2022 Hay Sheep Sale
Hay Associated agents recently held the annual September sale on Friday 23rd September, with a combined total of 20,000 head with 14000 young ewes, 1000 ewe lambs, 630 2-year-old ewes, 400 4-year-old ewes and 2800 5-year-old ewes.
With over 27mm of rain had by some stations north of Hay, some sheep were walked in a week before the event, in a bid to avoid trucks getting bogged, with the general consensus being that it was a smart move. With Hay experiencing three wet seasons to date, this has translated into more weight in the sheep. Sheep sold to buyers from across NSW and Victoria with a strong contingent of repeat buyers coming back to secure quality genetics from local breeders. The quality of the sheep was consistent throughout the sale seeing results average up to $20/head dearer than the same sale 12 months ago.
The young ewes topped at $440 for the Yarto Pastoral Company offering of 404 March/April 2021 drop Alma blood ewes. Maiden ewes sold from $440 to $160 with the majority of sheep selling between $270-380/head. Ewe lambs again sold to strong competition selling from $132-$168. 2-year-old ewes offered from PM Lawrence & Sons sold for $320. Older ewes sold from $122-$220 with the Daisy Plains offering of 5- year-old, Alma blood ewes selling to a top of $220 dollars for the Bunyan family.
With the sale being interfaced with Auctionsplus, agents had some online support. However, it was evident that after 2 years of border closures, Victorian buyers were keen to see the sheep and in turn bought with confidence. “It was great to see such a large buying field at the rail, and all those attending came to buy.
“All the sheep were ready to join, and buyers knew they would need to pay reasonable money to secure a line of sheep from the Hay district,” said Elders Branch Manager Andrew Low.
Agents will now turn their attention to the October Store sheep sale to be held on the 21st of October 2022 at 11 am
