Poll shows Liberals ahead, but support in Farrer is slipping
By Krista Schade
A recent poll has showed most Farrer electorate voters would vote for the Liberal Party Candidate Sussan Ley in the upcoming federal election, although her popularity seems to have slipped slightly since her 2019 victory.
Thirty-nine per cent of respondents said they would vote for the Liberal Party, 22 per cent independent, 21 per cent Labor, four per cent each backed the Nationals or Greens and six per cent nominated others.
Ms Ley did not respond to calls for comment on the poll but said she is excited for upcoming federal election.
“From Albury to Griffith and across the electorate, I’ve spoken to so many people over the last three years; mums and dads, small and large families, business owners and manufacturers, all who say, ‘they are just not getting ahead’,” Ms Ley said.
“What the Coalition is offering is a government which will better manage the economy, curb unnecessary spending, wind in inflation and reduce the cost of energy.
“I have already made – and will make – a number of local election commitments across Farrer.”
Independent Michelle Milthorpe was an early candidate for the seat of Farrer, and more recently the Labor Party has endorsed Tocumwal’s Glen Hyde to run against Ley and Milthorpe for the seat of Farrer.
In the 2019 election Ms Ley gained almost 51 per cent of votes, followed by independent Kevin Mack (20.49 per cent) and the Labor Party (14.64 per cent.) The remaining 15 per cent was shared amongst all other candidates.
"These survey results are certainly encouraging, but the job is far from done,” Ms Milthorpe said.
“What I’m hearing from people across Farrer is that they want change—but there’s also hesitation, a fear of what that change might look like. I understand that.
“I’m not a career politician - I’m a teacher, a mum, a wife, and a community member just like everyone else.
“I know firsthand the challenges we face in Farrer because I live them too.
“That’s why I am working so hard to be present, to listen, and to show people that independent representation isn’t something to be afraid of—it’s something that can deliver real results for our communities.
“This campaign isn’t about me; it’s about all of us.
“And I’ll keep working every day to make sure the people of Farrer feel heard, valued, and represented."
The poll was held by Australian Community Media (ACM) who’s stable of newspapers includes The Area News and Leeton Irrigator.
A total of 309 voters responded.
The date for the federal election was announced by the Prime Minster last week.
Australians will go to the polls on May 3.
