Yarto tops annual Hay spring sheep sale

By Krista Schade

Hay Associated Agents offered a total yarding of 33,500 head at Friday’s annual September sheep sale.

Helen and Greg Rogers of ‘Yarto Station’ Booligal, again topped the sale, repeating their good form across previous years.

Bidding on pen 1 of ‘Yarto’ bred, August shorn Merino ewes started slowly but eventually made $314 to top the sale.

It is a far cry from the Rogers’ 2021 result, where they reached $514, and commentators said it was a reflection of the pressure on the market from the dry conditions in Victoria.

Daisy Plains April/May 2023 drop Merino ewes sold to $294.

The flock dispersal sale of ‘Mutherumbung Station’ sold between $215 to $ 120, to an average of $166.

‘Caroonboon’ Merino Stud sold the only pen of 90 stud ewes to $103. The stud’s Dohne cross Merino Ewes sold to $162.

‘Miegunyah’ Merino ewe lambs from Booroorban topped the lamb price with $101.

$201 was paid for older Merino ewes from ‘Minarto’, Ivanhoe.

Alongside breeders, meat processors also secured young mutton destined for the butcher’s shop, with prices ranging between $120 and $130.

Yarding numbers were up from the 2022 sale, when 30,000 head was on offer.
