Hay War Memorial High School dominates at gala day tournament

The Hay War Memorial High School Girls tennis team of Tilly Weeks, Hannah Jamieson, Rachel Taylor and Indyanna Wilson won the Riverina West Gala Day tournament against a strong Deniliquin girls’ team.

Hay’s team won with a top score of 7 sets to 1.

This is the third year in a row the team has qualified for the Riverina semifinals.

West Zone, the zones in which Hay is included, was in previous years dominated by Finley.

“The standard of tennis was high with the atmosphere and tournament discipline excellent with special thanks to Leonie Booth for her involvement and organisation,” said Tony Callaghan.

The boy’s team was not so lucky, narrowly finishing third behind Deniliquin and Barham schools. The team was Hilton Hargreaves, Uzair Shahzad, Dan Jamieson and Jaylen Dixon.

Over twenty teams are now competing in the Wednesday night men’s, women’s and mixed competitions with further entries most welcome.

There is a general bye this week. Morrisons Shearing team of Anna Lilburne and Sue Parslow commenced their season last week going down to the Rosevale team of Richard and Henry Cannon 6/1 6/5. Former champions Hydes Plumbing – (Trish Jamieson and Kirsten Hutchings) enjoyed a great match 5/6 6/2 win over (Sophie and Heidi Stephens) Murphys Clothing team.

A top match was witnessed by Lugsdin Toyota (Tom Lugsdin and Liam Whitbourne) 6/2 5/6 win over the Services Club team.

Hay Jewellers team of (Sue and Tyler Clancy) had a marathon 6/5 3/4 over Japps.

Other winners were Harrisons IGA, AFF, Les’ Small Engines, Crighton’s, and Bidgee Earthmoving.

There will be no Saturday organised tennis on the back courts or Sunday morning juniors’ activities this Easter weekend. Good luck to those players playing the Deniliquin Easter Tournament.
