Records broken at HWMHS carnival

An amazing three records were smashed at Hay War Memorial High School’s recent swimming carnival. Matilda Nisbet broke Sarah Smith’s 15 girls 50m breaststroke record from 1997.
Currawong house’s junior girl relay of Poppy Barnes, Lily Books, Evie Creighton and Hannah Jamieson broke the Murray record from 2016.
Currawong senior boys relay of Jensen and Hilton Hargreaves, Dan Jamieson and Devlin Clarke broke the Bidgee record from 2018.
Alex Giddins was crowned King of the Pool, and Queen of the Pool was Lily Books, both winning the handicap 50m race.
The carnival had a focus on attendance, inclusion and participation.
The novelty events were well supported, and competitive swimming events were hotly contested. Kangaroo House claimed the Rivers Shield for best war cry, with Currawong taking the points in the rap battle. Currawong’s strength in participation was a positive aspect in the final count, claiming back-to-back Christy Cups.
“The house spirit in both Currawong and Kangaroo has continued to grow,” Physical Education teacher Anthony Stokes said.
“A huge thank you to our staff, students and volunteers for making the day a huge success.
“Over the past four years attendance has grown year on year and has improved by 11 per cent.
“We had 60 per cent of those students who swam in a competitive event, swim in three or more races, up by 20 per cent from last year.
“Congratulations to everyone involved for a fantastic carnival.”
