Big first year at Caroonboon Merinos for Meddings duo

By Krista Schade

“It is hard to believe that the upcoming Caroonboon Merino Sale will mark our one year anniversary at Caroonboon,” said Caroonboon Merinos’ Georgie Meddings.

She and husband Derrym (pictured above) have enjoyed the first year.

“We are very glad that we made the move and are enjoy being able to live, work and contribute to this very special place.

“Twelve months on, we are settled in and actively managing the day to day operations of Caroonboon, the merino stud and the commercial flock.

“It’s been good to see the 2023 ram lamb drop come together this year with many of our top rams coming out of the 2022/2023 AI program.

“Given the pleasing 2022/2023 AI program results, in December 2023 we once again used semen from the $50,000 Ridgway Advance 211437 that we have a semen share in and Gunallo 210431 and inseminated 275 stud ewes.

“For the upcoming 2024 joining we will look to add some fresh genetics to the stud and have started our journey this year into DNA sampling and geonomics.

“Tom Lilburne has taken over as our Stud Classer with the retirement of his father Ian Lilburne last year.

“Between Tom, Derrym and myself we aim to keep to the large framed, plain bodied, long free stapled wool ‘Caroonboon type’ that we love and know,” Mrs Meddings said.
