Conflicting views on Lawn Cemetery

Last week we published a letter to the editor calling on Hay Shire Council to tidy up the lawn cemetery and remove faded plastic flowers and toys from graves, saying the area was starting to look like the tip.

This week we received two separate complaints about the ‘sterile’ appearance of the lawn cemetery.

“I visited the lawn cemetery on Thursday and was dismayed at how unloved it looks,” concerned citizen, Sue Ovens wrote.

“Maybe it is because of the heat and tidying up, but it looks so unloved and sterile.

“There are no plastic flowers - some people cannot get fresh ones all the time. No toys on the children’s graves left by a sad family, or happy plaques to commemorate that person.

“It is a barren landscape.”

Another disgruntled resident, Michelle Plant said she had been to Council to lodge a complaint after discovering a Jane McGrath rose at the cemetery had been trimmed to ground level.

“It was a healthy rose bush, there was no reason for it to be removed,” Michelle told The Grazier.

“Disgusting, and baby items have also disappeared.”
