Jump aboard team Dyson

Long serving bus driver, Gwen Harris at the wheel, with Depot Supervisor of Hay, Deniliquin and Finley, Evan Maidment.

Have you been considering finding work, but are unsure on something that suits your needs, and lifestyle? The solution may be right under your nose.

Dyson Group is looking for school bus drivers, and in the company’s small-knit, happy and friendly community. The company is certain that the right person is just around the corner, waiting to snap up a prime opportunity such as this.

The on-the-job training is comprehensive, so you won’t be thrown in the deep end, a mere case of getting in your car, driving to the Macauley Street Depot, and rolling off in your bus. $35 an hour being the casual rate, which is an enviable amount.

Don’t have your medium or medium rigid license? That doesn’t matter. For the right employee who is willing to commit to a minimum of 12 months’ work, they will work with you to attain the right requirements. They can also help with attaining Drivers Authority and Working with Children Certificate.

In an industry that may be stereotyped as male dominated, the reality could not be further from the truth. Gwen Harris, lifelong local, has been driving school buses for 31 years. A pensioner, with 19 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and another three on the way, she says that her much-loved job fits in with her lifestyle perfectly.

“It also allows me the opportunity to earn money on top of my pension, and with the increase in earning limits from Service Australia, I am allowed to earn my usual wage per fortnight and not have anything deducted from my pension.”

Working with children is something Gwen enjoys, and sings the praises of those who use the bus services.

“In my 31 years, I have very rarely ever come across a badly behaved child on the bus,” she said. “They are courteous, and all know the rules, and adhere to them.

“You form a closeness of sorts, one time when I mentioned that I was considering retiring, the children said ‘no you can’t do that,’ and it was really lovely.”

Gwen finds driving the big buses a little intimidating, so she drives the smaller ones. Although she does not see her boss Evan much, and says that both Evan and the Dyson team are very accommodating.

“If I need to attend a doctor’s appointment that cannot happen between driving hours, I will work in the morning and have the afternoon off, for instance,” she said. “They are happy to work around their employees, and are wonderful employers.”

At the end of the day, working two hours in the morning, and two in the afternoon would be the perfect situation for someone looking to supplement income, a person juggling study and work, or a pensioner looking to make a little extra. Or, someone who is looking to earn a little more through a second job.

Dyson is an employer offering incredibly competitive incentives. Full on-the-job training, free access to mental health assistance programs, health and wellbeing programs, parking onsite, annual end of year celebration, reward and recognition program, years of service awards, social club, and uniform is provided.
