Minister opens million-dollar projects

Hay celebrated the completion of more than $1 million in community infrastructure and sporting facilities with a recent visit from Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW, Paul Toole to officially open the projects.

These include Witcombe Place which received a major upgrade with art and sculptures acknowledging some of the district’s local history and stories such as the Shilling Ram and Mrs McGrath’s Sheep.

The addition of five flagpoles has further enhanced the look of the civic area.

Mr Toole also visited the grandstand, jockey room, stables and office and other amenities at the showgrounds where the caretaker’s cottage was also replaced.

Three projects were also delivered for the community at Hay Park, including new women’s and umpires’ amenities and upgrades to the canteen on number one oval.

Mr Toole said the new facilities would make Hay an even better place to live, work and raise a family.

“This is a huge day for Hay, marking the completion of more than $1million worth of projects which will have an impact on everyday life for locals and strengthen the community,” he said.

“We want everyone to be able to reap the benefits of community sport, and improving opportunities for female participation is a crucial part of that.

“The new amenities block will be used by local football, netball and cricket clubs, delivering the facilities they need now, and into the future.”

A total of $205,000 has gone into re-invigorating the heart of town, including widening footpaths to improve accessibility, new seating, planter boxes, trees and art installations to drive more activity to the town centre.

Mr Toole said having a vibrant, accessible CBD with green spaces instills a sense of pride and encourages people to come out and enjoy the area, as well as fostering a sense of community spirit and wellbeing.

Hay Shire mayor, Carol Oataway said upgrades to the main street, the showgrounds and Hay Park were second to none and have improved the experience for all users.

“All locations are family friendly, safe and accessible and have taken on a new lease of life,” Cr Oataway said.

“The investment in our town has ensured that Hay is an even more attractive and comfortable place to live and visit.”

Following Mr Toole’s visit, Council also opened the new park shed and stage at Hay Park last week for use at Carols in the Park last Saturday night.

The new netball courts and undercover court will be opened this week and Council hopes to complete the new lights at number two oval before Christmas.

Mr Toole also inspected the works being carried out at the swimming pool.
