Balaranald Roos CanAssist Day

By Kimberly Grabham

Balranald Roos are set to host the Central Murray League second semi-final at Greenham Park on September 9.

The Senior Roos have enjoyed a downright scorching season, sitting third on the ladder, with a mere matter of percentage points between them and second-placed Woorien, both holding 40 points apiece. Top of the ladder, Kerang, is on 44 points.

One thing is for sure, the Balranald Roo’s camp should be quietly confident of their 2023 finals prospects.

Roos took on Tyntynder on the weekend, who are ninth on the ladder.

The teams faced off early on in the season, with Balranald walking away with a win 63 – 35.

The Roos ran out onto the field sporting a special jumper in celebration of Balranald Footy Club's annual CaAssist day, which were auctioned off later that evening.

Balranald enjoyed a convincing win, scoring 19 goals 11 behinds, to Tyntynder’s 13 goals 8.

Ben Fuller kicked eight goals, with three each to Drew Lloyd and Jydon Neagle, and two to Ethan Gant. Matthew Neagle, Colin Andrews and Tom Salau each booted singles.

Reserves also enjoyed a great win against Tyntynder and walked away victorious, 11 goals 7 behinds to Tyntynder’s 5 goals 10.

Balranald reserves are currently sitting in fifth place on the ladder.

In a touching tribute to life member, tireless worker and legend of Balranald Football Club, players, club officials, umpires and many others from both Balranald and Tyntynder stood together for a minute's silence in honour of much-loved club stalwart Jeff Mannix.

The gate raffle raised $1800 for CanAssist, plus additional cash donations. Afternoon tea and dinner was had with Tyntynder that evening, while the CanAssist auction was held.

Highlight of the night was the auctioning of a framed Australia Diamonds 2022-2023 quad championship winning dress, signed by all the players, donated by Netball Australia, and framed by Ornamental Glass Picture Framers.

This special offering was organised Roo’s player Jordan “Larry” Wilkins and aunt Michelle.

The framed dress was purchased by Bernie Coates for $2000, with this money going direct to Balranald CanAssist.

Balranald Seniors next take on Woorien, with Woorien having the home field advantage.

Balranald CanAssist’s Alison Linnett, Balranald Football Club President Tony Stead, Roos player Jordan “Larry” Wilkins who organised the dress, successful purchaser Bernie Coates, and Balranald Can Assist committee member Helen Murphy.

Bernie purchased the dress for $2000, which made it one of the major fundraisers of the evening. Image: Gillian Nield.
