Jodie Hicks is off to Tigerland

Local sporting great, Jodie Hicks (pictured above) has been snapped up by the Richmond Tigers in the 2023 AFL Women’s draft.

Previously a forward, and most recently a defender for GSW Giants, it was announced that the dual sportsperson was snapped up by the Tigers late afternoon on Wednesday, December 13.

The talented dual athlete, having previously played cricket for the Sydney Sixers, had a year off from football, and then was re-signed by the Giants.

She was inspirationally open about her battles with confidence, taking time off to reflect on her direction and gain some clarity, before returning to the AFLW. Hicks played all 10 games in her return season following her time away playing and coaching with Macquarie University.

A highly talented player, with immense football knowledge, and aptitude for the game, Hicks can both set the game up from defence or lock down on a forward.

Hicks, 26, is a great new asset for the Tigers, arriving in career best form, having played every game in the past two seasons and finishing fourth in the Giants’ season seven best and fairest.

Playing as a defender Hicks has averaged 12 disposals, 3.8 tackles and 196.5 metres across 20 matches.

“I am so excited to be at a new club with such rich history,” Jodie told The Riverine Grazier. “I am looking forward to the next chapter and what’s to come!”

Richmond Head of Women’s Football, Kate Sheahan told Richmond Media it was pleasing to add two established players to the list.

“Jodie is a natural footballer that has been exposed to elite standards across two sports. We see a lot of upside in her already impressive game, and are particularly excited about her ability to play multiple roles in defence or across the midfield and wing,” she added.

“Ally is a powerful midfielder, she is tough, courageous, has great speed and plays the Richmond way. We think Jodie and Ally will fit right in and look forward to getting them to the Swinburne Centre.”

Congratulations, Jodie, we will all be cheering you and the Tigers on this season, we are sure it will be a great season for you!
