Hay Goju Kai Dojo hosted a grading recently at their dojo, the Community Building.

Students graded were Wyatt Ridgewell, Lana-Rose Jessop, Harley Atkinson and Chris Jamieson-yellow belt; Andre Terblanche and Bradley Dickson - green belt and Pierre Terblanche - blue belt.

Students were tested in individual skills, pre-arranged sparring and kata (a choreographed pattern of movement).

The grading panel and consisted of Robert Anderson and Robyn Symons, with Jack Terblanche serving as a sparring partner for the higher belts.

The Goju Ryu style of Karate is a traditional Okinawan form, which is known as a hard and soft style. The style includes the hard strikes and kicks that have popularised karate, and the softer aspects that are normally associated with Chinese martial arts – open handed strikes, blocks and circular movements.

Hay Dojo has been in existence for 20 years, where students are being trained by Sensei Robert Andersen.

Sensei Rob, as he is known, has been active in karate for over 30 years and is a fourth Dan black belt in Goju Ryu. He represented Australia at competition and coaching at international level.

Hay Goju Kai Dojo will have a “Free February” Program this year for all ages to come and try out.

Sensei Robert Anderson said the program was a great success in the past, with numerous new students coming to test traditional karate in the previous years.

He said new students would find the martial art helping them not only physically, but also with concentration, self-discipline and resilience.

The style is suitable for all ages, and Hay Dojo caters for all levels of children and adults.

Anyone interested in trying out can call Sensei Rob Andersen on 6993 4893.
