Improvements are on the way for the main street of Hay.
Work is set to start next week on improvements to the main street to provide a stronger road and a smoother and safer journey for up to 5000 vehicles that drive through the town each day.
Hay Shire Council General Manager, David Webb welcomed the announcement made on Monday afternoon.
“Council staff have been working with TfNSW on the Lachlan Street surface upgrade works for the past two years and we look forward to the works finally being undertaken.,” Mr Webb said.
“It will improve the look and rideability of the main street of Hay.
“We anticipate there will be disruptions while the work is being undertaken and request patience from all users and residents.”
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said a one-kilometre stretch of the Cobb Highway (known locally as Lachlan Street) between Brunker Street and just past Leonard Street, will be rebuilt.
The Murray Street intersection near the bowling club will also be resurfaced.
“Work will take about seven weeks to complete and will be split into two stages,” the spokesperson said.
“The first stage of work will involve lining stormwater pipes and digging up sections of Lachlan Street to install concrete protection to underground utilities, while the second stage will see the road surface replaced.”
Stage one will start on Monday, May 6 and expected to be finished by the end of May, weather permitting.
Work will be carried out Monday to Saturday in a combination of day and night shifts, between 7am to 5pm or 7pm to 3am, to reduce impacts to the community.
Stage two will start on Tuesday, June 11 and be completed by the end of June, weather permitting.
Work will be carried out seven days a week in two shifts between 7am to 5pm and 5.30pm to 12.30am for two weeks, then return to day shift for the final week.
Two Sunday shifts, on June 16 and 23, will be night work.
Work will start from Brunker Street and move north towards Leonard Street in about 150-metre sections.
To minimise impacts to the community and businesses in the busy town precinct, Lachlan Street will remain open with single lane closures.
There will be some temporary traffic changes to keep the work zone safe, including changes to parking and pedestrian access, temporary side street closures, reduced speed limits, and detours for over size and over mass vehicles.
The resurfacing of Murray Street intersection will be carried out after work in the town centre is finished.
