Ben performed superbly, defeating the 2023 Regional Champion 6-3 in the final.

Next line of elite coaches and stars

The Christmas school holidays have been bumper to bumper with various tennis opportunities for Hay’s youth.

Recently, Camp Six of the coaching clinics was held, with Brad Callaghan, Indyanna Wilson, and Stuart Callaghan at the helm.

There was a flurry of attendance, with 22 children participating in the session.

Hay Fishing Classic 2024 - Gadsby’s victory, reeling in the longest murray cod

Hay Lions Annual Fishing Classic was a resounding success, with a huge attendance by locals and people coming in from around the district.

There were an incredible 891 fish caught over the span of the competition, with 178 carp reeled in, 277 legal fish, 713 native fish, 277 legal native fish, four silver perch, and four golden perch (yellow belly).

Hay’s annual swimming carnival makes a splash at Hay Pool

Hay Amateur Swimming Club held its annual swimming carnival on Saturday, providing a wonderful opportunity for many of the swimmers to compete in what was their first carnival outside school.

Competitors also travelled from Griffith, Coleambally, Deniliquin, Finley and Leeton/Yanco swimming clubs.

Jodie Hicks is off to Tigerland

Local sporting great, Jodie Hicks (pictured above) has been snapped up by the Richmond Tigers in the 2023 AFL Women’s draft.

Previously a forward, and most recently a defender for GSW Giants, it was announced that the dual sportsperson was snapped up by the Tigers late afternoon on Wednesday, December 13.

The talented dual athlete, having previously played cricket for the Sydney Sixers, had a year off from football, and then was re-signed by the Giants.

Amidst the spectacular Fashions on the Fields, marquees which were sold out within the first week of sale, reunions and special events held, was some outstanding racing and considerable prize money on offer.

The combination of jockey Connor Murtagh and trainer Craig Weeding proved to be widely successful, with the pair cleaning up four wins, including the $20,000 Tapper Agri Services Hay Cup.

Women’s tackle on the cards as Magpies duo appointed to Group 20 Board

Hay Magpies President Kelly Gash has been appointed to the governing board of Group 20 in the position of vice-president, alongside treasurer Serena Wall, who takes on a board position.

The appointment follows a turbulent season for Hay which could have been the impetus for the Magpies to put forward quality candidates to ensure the voice of the Hay club is heard.

The AGM also voted to introduce women’s tackle into the competition for the first six rounds of the 2024 season, running parallel to the league tag and men’s matches.
